Speed Skating FAQ'S

Power Play Rinks, 701 Haywood Drive, Exton, PA 19341

Practice Schedule

Our club trains twice each week at Power Play Rinks, combining on-ice and off-ice sessions to help athletes develop speed, strength, power, and skating technique.

Thursday

  • Off-Ice Training (Winter Session Only): 5:30 PM – 6:15 PM in The Lab Training Center (2nd Floor)
  • On-Ice Practice: 6:35 PM – 7:55 PM

Saturday

  • Off-Ice Training (Winter Session Only): 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM in The Lab Training Center
  • On-Ice Practice: 2:20 PM – 3:45 PM during the Fall and Winter seasons

Sunday

  • Additional on-ice practices may be scheduled periodically at Power Play Rinks based on ice availability and the training calendar.

It is recommended to get to practice about 30 minutes early for warm up and to set the pads on the ice.  We then skate for about 1 – 1.5 hours and remove the pads.

Our coach, C. Kyle Carr, has had an exciting and successful career as both a short-track speedskater and an inline speedskater.  Kyle was fourth overall at the 2014 Olympic Trials and skated for the United States Olympic Team at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.  Kyle was a member of the United States World Cup Team every year from 2010 to 2013 and won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2011.  Kyle has been coaching East Penn Speedskating since December 2014.

You don’t need to immediately, however, you will need them shortly after beginning.  Properly fitting skates is very important while speedskating.  We do have speedskates available for new skaters to use, but we cannot guarantee that we have every size available.  Please contact a club officer or coach to see if your skater’s size is available.  If you decide to continue to skate, it would be best to purchase your own skates.  Skates consist of boots, blades and guards.

http://www.specialequipment.com sells short track skating equipment if you decide to pursue speedskating.  It is best that you speak to Kyle prior to buying skates, so that he can make recommendations for you.

For beginners, a helmet such as a bike or hockey helmet is fine to start with.  Soft knee pads worn either over or under pants, gloves such as hockey gloves, batting gloves or winter gloves are good for beginners.  Skaters must also wear long pants and long sleeves.  However, after you become a member of the club you will need to purchase a club skinsuit.

The Club fees cover ice time, trainer & coaching fees for the enrolled season. Separate memberships is required to US Speedskating and MASA.  Total fees vary from year to year.

East Penn Speedskating Club is a volunteer organization, so any help that parents can provide is always welcome.  Bringing the skaters to practice on time and helping with setting up and removing pads is also helpful.
